TNQ Restaurant and Bar, The Northern Quarter, Manchester

December 5, 2016

What was the Challenge?

It is common for restaurants to be noisy reverberant spaces. Many are large volume rooms, with hard finishes, open kitchens, easy clean floors and tables that reverberate the noise around and of course full of diners chatting and being merry. Atmosphere is of utmost importance to a venue such as this, however, noise levels should be controlled to ensure customers have the best possible experience.

We were approached by TNQ Restaurant & Bar who were struggling with this particular issue in their Northern Quarter Restaurant.  They were conscience of the reverberation caused from the high ceilings and hard wooden floors. Described as “a relaxed & stylish dining room, loved for its exposed wooden floor & grand windows showcasing the iconic Smithfield Fish Markets”, we were excited to take up the challenge and ensure the client maintained its cult status.

After initial discussion over the phone, our soundproof assessor and expert arranged to visit the site to view the area and discuss further with the Restaurant Team. He discussed their available options and then sent them a proposal outlining these.

How we applied Restaurant Soundproofing

We carried out a Reverberation Time calculation. Reverberation is the prolongation of a sound; resonance, echo, vibration etc. Reverberation time is defined as the length of time required for sound to decay 60 decibels from its initial level. From the calculations that we carried out with the specified installation (Sonata Aurio Panels), we worked out that we could reduce the reverberation time to 1.2 secs Tmf.

The project was completed by installing 24 No Sonata Aurio Panels 500mm x 500mm to the walls and 10 No Sonata Aurio Panels 1000mm x 1000mm to the ceiling.

Sonata Aurio Panels

The Aurio absorber is a high performance acoustic foam with a high-quality fabric finish or PVC coating on the face, edges and back return surfaces, in a colour chosen from the chart. Customer’s own fabric may be suitable if of an open-weave. They are directly fitted to most backgrounds, walls, and ceilings. The panels are fixed with Sonatac adhesive.

  • Versatile – fits in any orientation: wall or ceiling (inc sloping); portrait or landscape
  • Visually pleasing – available in a choice of sizes, colours and finishes (fabric or PVC)
  • Simple and clean to install – no drilling, simply fix using Sonata Sonatac adhesive.

TNQ getting new sound absorbers for their restaurant in Manchester

TNQ Restaurant were thrilled with the results. It has created a much more pleasant dining experience for their customers. The Sonata Aurio Panels are aesthetically pleasing and blend well with the overall contemporary design of the restaurant’s interior. The sound level has dramatically reduced and echo and reverberation has lessened.

The client also left us a positive review, stating: “Can you hear me now? Productive day at TNQ with the lads from Floorscan installing some acoustic panels, it sounds so different!”

Another job well done to our knowledgable and hardworking team of engineers, and most importantly, a satisfied customer which is what we strive for at Floorscan Acoustics.
